I believe XF86_SVGA is a X 3.3.6 server and not an X 4.x.x driver (someone correct me 
if I am
wrong). You would have to know which X version you are running before attempting to 
use it (X
-version should tell).
Normally startx runs /etc/X11/X -which usually is a symlink to either 
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 (X
4.x.x) or to a 3.3.6 server (for instance /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA) in better 
configurated distros
you will get Xwrapper between the two (for security purposes).
The large display is usually what you get as default when your card is not 
recognised...
You can look on the XFree86.org site for the list of supported cards...
