kdmconfig only sets up OpenWindows...  your best bet is to run
xf86cfg and see what it detects.  If that fails, look at
/etc/openwin/server/etc/OWconfig (the file kdmconfig generates) for
clues to what device to use; the protocol is likely either 'Auto'
or one of the PS/2 variants.
