I do not wish to be slow on the intake but the XF86Config-4 had the RIGHT format for X 4.x.x. Are you SURE your XF86Config does not still have the 3.3.6 format (a good way to check is that a 3.3.6 config file has a pointer and a keyboard section while 4.x.x has "InputDevice" sections Trying to run 4.x.x with a 3.3.6 config file won't lead you anywhere...
