Hi,
I have been able to run the SVGA server ( the one in Xfree86 3.3.6,
that came along with redhat 6.2 ) with 800x600 (16bpp) & 1024x768
(8bpp) modes on my cirrus logic 5434 with 1 mb vram.
this info is wrt Lionel's 1st & 2nd questions:
ya, i deleted that XF86Config-4 as soon as i installed Xfree 4.0.2. i have
been tweaking the XF86Config. i m using the cirrus driver (the module
cirrus_alpine.o.
i fixed that input device differences between the old XF86Config and the
new ones. I have already got 800x600(8bpp) working -- so all stuff is
probably right. it is only 16bpp that is giving me the problems
However after my upgrade to redhat 7.1 and Xfree86 4.0.2, i have'nt been
able to get any 16 bpp modes & 1024x768 modes. my earlier XF6Config
does'nt work any more. i have got back 800x600(8bpp) but that seems to be
the maximum this SVGA server can give, both in terms of color depth &
resolution.
this info is wrt Dexter's question:
My cirrus logic card is PCI card mapped to 14mb. i had problems with
"pixie dust" on my rh 6.2, but i fixed it with "option slow_dram". the new
driver does'nt seem to need this option. i had cursor problems which i
fixed with the hardware cursor option. despite quite a bit of tweaking
around, i have not been able to fix the 16bpp problem.
Here is some information that startx spits out when i asked for 800x600
(16bpp):

what does that last message mean ? 800 x 600 x 2 bytes = 960000b for
which my 1 mb vram should be adequate.
can anyone help me ? i did read somewhere, that when my card is at the
14mb point in address space, 16bpp is'nt possible -- but it did work on my
old redhat 6.2 -- that is why i think it is some configuration screwup.
life is miserable with 256 colors -- i do'nt even have a wallpaper so that
my global color map does'nt get exhausted ! kde 2 itself uses up most of
it, there is previous little left for anything else
bye,
kjk
