Have done this, it is already at run level 5 but still does not go into gui
login. boot.messages show is goes into runlevel 5, but it does not.

Go to a console ctrl-alt-f2 and login as root, go to the /etc directory and
edit inittab and look for the following line

id:3:initdefault:

and change the 3 to a 5.
