hmmm. i added the defaultdepth line and the modes- now startx
defaults to 16 bpp (woo hoo!) but still no 800x600. i'll spare you
the entire log file but it does say

>(II) CHIPS(0): Not using mode "800x600" (no mode of this name)

where it did not before, so i presume it's trying to use 800x600 but
i'm not phrasing it right somehow.

there's a whole bunch of these

>(II) CHIPS(0): Not using default mode "blahxblah" (insufficient
>memory for mode)

in the log file, so maybe i don't have enough memory after all.
although i vaguely remember seeing 800x600 reso when i turned it on
for the first time- it came preinstalled with windows 95 which i
gleefully wiped the first chance i got. point being, it is capable of
higher than 640x480 unless i was hallucinating. or on crack. both of
which are possible i suppose.

oh. and sorry for not saying so before, but it is an LCD i'm using
here. sorry if that caused any confusion.

thanks
paul
