Hello XFree86 Newbie List: I recently upgraded to XFree86 4.2.0., and I now can only achieve a color depth of 8. I have been using XFree86 since 3.3.3. (most recently 4.1.0) and have never had trouble until using up to a color depth of 24. I have been using the following (cheap) video card: Trident 3DImage975 AGP (generic).
When I try to start X with a color depth of 16 or 24, I get only a dark greenish screen, on which it is impossible to read anything. I am worried that in the process of upgrading, I may have damaged my card (is this possible?), for now I have the same problem if I try Version 4.1.0. I made diff file comparing my logs for depths of 8 and 16, respectively. Perhaps the following excerpt sheds light on the problem? 13c13 < (==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Thu Jan 31 16:43:54 2002 --- > (==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Thu Jan 31 16:42:25 2002 255c255 < (++) TRIDENT(0): Depth 16, (--) framebuffer bpp 16 --- > (++) TRIDENT(0): Depth 8, (--) framebuffer bpp 8 269,270c269 < (==) TRIDENT(0): RGB weight 565 < (==) TRIDENT(0): Default visual is TrueColor --- > (==) TRIDENT(0): Default visual is PseudoColor 395c394 < (II) TRIDENT(0): Not using default mode "1792x1344" (insufficient memory for mode) --- > (II) TRIDENT(0): Not using default mode "1792x1344" (hsync out of range) 397c396 < (II) TRIDENT(0): Not using default mode "1792x1344" (insufficient memory for mode) --- > (II) TRIDENT(0): Not using default mode "1792x1344" (bad mode >clock/interlace/doublescan) 399c398 < (II) TRIDENT(0): vgaHWGetIOBase: hwp->IOBase is 0x03d0, hwp->PIOOffset is 0x0000 (This last line is repeated many times.) Anybody have any idea what has gone wrong, before I run out and buy a better video card only to have it have the same problem? Thanks, Daniel Wolk [EMAIL PROTECTED] PS I first upgraded using the latest rpms from SuSE. Later I installed the XFree86 binaries, which are what I am using now. _______________________________________________ Newbie mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** To unsubscribe , or change message options, see: http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/newbie
