This does not solve my problem.  Indeed, I have that line (DefaultDepth 24) in
my XF86Config file.  I am only able to function in X at all by overriding this
setting with "-- -depth 8".  New points to add:

(1) It makes no difference if I use the 4.2.0 binaries from XFree86.org, the
    SuSE 4.2.0 rpms, or SuSE 4.1.0 rpms.

(2) I tried resetting the VESA Framebuffer VGA Mode in LILO, from the default
    vga=771 (i.e. 8 bpp) to vga=788 (ie 16 bpp).  The result: all was normal
    until I QUIT X, at which my screen went moribund again (a hideous dark green).

So I really think my video card is "on the blink".
