Can you log in as "root"?  Does OS X even have a root account?  If you
can log in as root, you should be able to edit /etc/group with any text
editor.  For all I know, the superuser account is not even called root
in OS X.  Does the first line of /etc/passwd start with
"root:*:0:0:..."?
