Thanks to everyone who was helping me! I found out that the problem was that the XFree86 4.1 drivers for the Radeon VE card where buggy. My screen blacked out because the driver was driving the DVI port instead of the VGA port on my card. I did solve the problem by completely removing XFree86 4.1 from the system and doing a clean install of XFree86 4.2.0
There still seems to be a bug in that the color depth only works at 8 bit setting. If anyone knows how to fix it please share it on the list.
