I don't know anything about RPMs, but installing 4.2.0 from the XFree86
binaries should be pretty easy.  It was trouble-free on FreeBSD, and
RedHat should be as well tested as that.  If it doesn't work for you, or
if you're feeling too skeptical, get 3.3.6
