I know that Linux kernel can work with or without modules, I don't know whether X has a simillar functionality or not. All I know (and I am not certain about it either), is that "RENDER" extension is something that RedHat's X server does not have and as far as I know it is something that you can choose to compile or not when building X server. Since I never built an X server on my own, I only used RedHat's I can't answer this question... :-(
