Hi everybody, I'm looking for somebody to explain me something regarding rendering things. I have two systems running Linux. The first is a Suse 7.0 (Kernel 2.2.16) with KDE2.1.1(QT2.2.4) and XFree86 4.1.0. AA is working fine, the types are sharp and clear. Also applications like StarOffice is working fine, but the types are just type1 and not that clear.
Because I was curious, and wanted to know how everything works together I built also a LinuxFromScratch (LFS)-system. At this system I have compiled a XFree86 4.2.0 with systems freetype2- and zlib-library, not the libraries that come with XFree86. Also the KDE 2.2.2 and QT-2.3.1. is compiled and installed. I have installed some Microsoft TT-fonts in both, the Suse and the LFS system, but they are looking different. I know that 4.2.0 comes with Xft, that uses the freetype2-library, and somewhere I have read, that QT uses this render-engine to create the fonts. Why are the fonts looking different between 4.1.0 and 4.2.0 ? I have also tried to install StarOffice 5.2 but the fonts are not readable, doesn't matter which fonts I install. I have also tried to make TT useable for SO5.2, and they are displayed in the font-list of the font-dialog, but they are rendered really bad. Than I have put the path to my TT-fonts also in XF86Config, and suddenly they were displayed nearly readable, but still not the same than on my Suse-linux-box. The type1 fonts coming with SO5.2 didn't displayed correctly anyway. After discussing the problem of SO5.2 with a guy from the KDE-group, I decided to give OpenOffice a chance. I deleted the entry for the TT-fonts in the XF86Config file to see if things were different, but they weren't. Not having this path in the XF86Config makes the font also for OpenOffice not readable. Than I added the path again, and added the TT-fonts into the OpenOffice-configuration, they were selectable and displayed in a readable way, but not that good than e.g. in Windows. Also the widgets of OO and the menu-bar are still ugly. I havn't tried OO with XFree86-4.1.0. yet. So what is now the conclusion of this posting ? Some questions are left. 1. Is the font rendering-engine of 4.1.0 different than 4.2.0 ? 2. If so, is it possible that the 4.2.0 engine make fonts look different from the 4.1.0-engine ? 3. Why is the path to truetype-fonts needed in XF86Config and Xftconfig ? 4. Is ist possible, that applications not using 4.2.0 Xft running into problems (like SO5.2 or OpenOffice) while displaying fonts ? 5. Is there any work-around or configuration-possibility to fix those font-problems ? Hopefully somebody will have the time to read this.....
