Hello Folks,
I'm over the moon!
I have been trying for a long time to get X running on my laptop. It is
badged 'Pioneer' but is manufactured by Clevo. It is known by a lot of
names around the world. It is based on the SiS630 chip. It is a 1G PIII
with 256M of ram and with a SmartLink winmodem based on the SiS630 chip.
Well, I now have X up and running and the modem is runing as well. I'm
sending this message using it.
How I did it?
I did a vanilla install of RedHat 7.1. It has kernel 2.4.2-2 and Xfree
4.0.3. I accepted the results of the probe for the chip, which was found
correctly, chose a generic laptop display of 1024x768 and chose not to
test X during the install. After a successful install I rebooted, edited
lilo.conf with pico and added the line:- vga=791 and reboted again. I
logged in under my user login and did a startx. The first thing was that
the screen now had a much tidier look with some 50 plus lines and many
more chars wide. Also Tux was up in the top left while Linux was
loading. Luverly!!
The icing on the cake was the discovery on the net of a driver for the
inbuilt modem. File name:- sl_2.03-01.zip. This driver is specific to
Redhat 7.1 and kernel 2.4.2-2. The zip file contains a readme file with
full instructions on how to compile and install and load the driver. It
all went very smoothly.
I now have a fully functioning SiS630 based laptop complete with a
working modem. Bloody marvellous!!
If anyone wants the modem driver I can send it to you if you cannot find
it on the net.
I hope this may help others with the generic Clevo laptops.
Graeme.
