I am at the same stage as you and have read the Install file that came with the list of binaries. That is a pretty good doc to look at. But i am a newbie too... It is amazing how hard it is groping in the dark as a newbie - run without X they say, but as I have an installed Mandrake 8.1 I have never run without X and dont know how to run the machine without X What is the close down x command? Have tried man x and man xfree86 - they dont exist. ~~~ AH! Just tried info X and man X, that works! But have greped for a close or exit etc. without luck? Perhaps I need to boot up without X, where is that set? I thought it might be lilo but /etc/lilo.cfig has nothing obvious.
