Hi, the easyst way to install Xfree is to use the install.sh script, juast as the instructions say, but to use 4.2.0 you need to cheak if you have the glibc version to support it. The install instructions tell you how to check this, and to stop logging in to Xfree86 automaticly you need to run the Xfree86 configure script, that you can only run as root so ensure that you have that access, I think it is called xconfig or configx, or something like that by defult, but being your using Mandrake, it may very well be re-named to something else, and re-written to suit the distributions environment. the setting you are looking for is 'Change login method', changing this to 'text login' will leave you at the command line interface, awaiting your login. One more thing to note is, that NOT to use the old Xfree configure script that you used to change login methods, as this will now be out-dated, and possibly deleted anyway. Just make sure that you have all the minimum requirements for Xfree86 4.2.0 before installing it, and get another opinion if you're at all confused, witch is easy, as opposed to re-installing Mandrake. another thing to point out, is there is the possability that Mandrake may have Its own distribution of Xfree86. Check the site's downloads, updates, or support section first.
