Hi, I don't know what Marc will answer you (note he is an expert and I am just a newbie) However, I'll tell you what I would do: I would get a newer version of my distro backup my stuff and my settings and reinstall the whole thing. In my opinion one saves oneself a lot of time and troubles that way (OK it is not the most glorious approach...)
