We have several pentium 1 machines running linux (2.2.16, RedHat 7.0) and
XFree 4.2.0. Many have a S3 86C765 Trio64V+ on the motherboard and some have
a separate S3 86C765 Trio64V+ PCI card. This setup works fine, although the
s3 driver doesn't work properly with a depth of 8 in 800x600 it works fine
with a depth of 16.

It was decided that we should run these machines in a multi-headed setup with
a CT65550 PCI card (and a LCD monitor).

The machines with the separate S3 card can run XFree86 on either display
individually, but cannot do them both at the same time. There are no obvious
errors in the logs, but when I run them both simultaneously, the S3 screen is
completely blank.

The machines with the S3 on board work OK through the CT65550 card but
XFree86 cannot use the S3 at all. With the CT65550 plugged in, and trying to
run the S3 only, XFree86 reports the following (amongst other things):

(EE) s3(0): Cannot read V_BIOS

(EE) s3(0): Cannot read V_BIOS

(--) s3(0): videoRam = 0Kb

I thought this may have something to do with the BIOS somehow disabling the
on board S3 when another video card is plugged in. However, the BIOS doesn't
indicate this happens, and furthermore, it all works fine with multihead
under windows98.

We have had both types of machines running multihead by using the CT65550 and
an old Tseng Labs card, but unfortunately we have lots of these machines and
buying new cards for them would be a last resort.

Any help or suggestions would be greately appreciated. Is it likely that
this is simply because the S3 driver doesn't handle the 86C765 properly? Is
anyone working on updating the S3 driver? I don't know much about the older
versions of XFree86, is it possible to get this sort of multi-head setup
working with XFree86 3.3.6?

I can post the full logs from XFree86, or my XF86Config-4 files, or supply
any other information if that would help.

Thanks

Mark
