Hi,

I seem to have a huge problem getting X to run on my Dell
Inspiron 4100 XGA (1024x768) GeForce2Go 64M system. And, it's all about
screen modes (I think, because I do know how to get it running, I have a
Dell Inspiron 8100 SXGA+ GeForce2Go 64M system that I got working fine).

The problem seems to be that XFree86 seems to think that the
screen can run in some modes that it clearly can't! Specifically, from
the XFree86.0.log I see:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes for Display Device 0:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1400x1050": 122.0 MHz, 64.9 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1280x1024": 108.0 MHz, 64.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz
(**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1280x960": 108.0 MHz, 60.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz

All of the above will not work with this display, and when I
startx I get all kinds of pixelized blur on the screen. From what I can
see, the pointer goes off the screen to the right and the bottom where
it can't be seen.

I've specified the correct ModeLine's in my XF86Config-4, but it
always adds the above lines automatically by probing when I startx. I
want to permanently disable them, because they just aren't right, and I
suspect (but I'm not sure) that this is the reason I can't get X running
in a clear usable form.

So, how do I keep X from probing for screen modes?

Rob C.
