[Newbie] ATI Radeon8500 and XFree86

I am going to buy an ATI Radeon8500 instead of a Nvidia GeForce3 Ti500 graphic card because it's much cheaper for me . Currently there is no 3D hardware support available for ATI Radeon8500 graphic cards under XFree86 . Is it possible that in the near future the lack of 3D hardware support under XFree86 is redressed ? And what about 2D performance and features under XFree86 4.2.0 ?   Greets Christoph
