I haven't worked on this problem for awhile, but there are a few things I've
deduced from playing with it. First, I haven't done anything with Xinerama.
My video cards were both Matrox Millennium II's. My monitors were not
matched, using just what I have available: I have a Dell D-1526T-HS for the
main monitor. My other monitors were less capable: I used either a Relisys
RTL-8029, Compudyne KD-1440N,Laser 6448/51, or NEC 2A. I have only had both
monitors working if I used 640x480 for each one. When I went to higher
resolutions, the non-Dell monitor would go "scrambly"....All of the non-Dell
monitors seemed to require a vert. freq. <60, but because the Dell could do
the mode at >60, the Dell's settings were being used for both monitors,
despite listing both monitors and both cards and what freq's they should be
using in my config file. I am guess that a matched-pair of monitors will
get me past this problem, and the project of running dual-display has been
tabled until then.

The other thing I want to mention is that I was initially using Gnome.
Somebody pointed out to me that Gnome doesn't do multiple displays well. So
I changed to KDE. With KDE, I have almost identical screens on both
monitors (640x480), except no icons on the desktop for display #2. The
icons on desktop #1 will NOT drag to desktop #2, but can be copied and
pasted to desktop #2 (I guess it was too much to expect it to work like the
multiple-monitor setup I have on the Win 2000 box). Also, my default of
having 4 virtual desktops on screen #1 was duplicated to having another 4 on
desktop #2. It is my thought that in a final configuration I would use only
2 virtual desktops on each screen, maybe it'll free some system resources.
