Ctl+Alt+F<n>.  To switch from X to a text console, add Ctl.

Sorry I can't help you with the other problems on your list.  Actually,
I don't think I quite understand what you're asking.  Does XFree86
basically work OK for you, except for the spurious messages about the
USB mouse?
