man startx (or man X I don't remember) state quite clearly the search sequence for a config file. First comes the one specified in the command (incase one specifies one) then in the home directory (RH added one there in one of its incarnations, which threw me for a loop since I was hacking the one in /etc/X11...) then the one in /etc/X11 etc... HOWEVER, I would do X -version, NOT XFree86 -version: XFree86 being 4.0.3 You will always get 4.0.3 whether you are running 3.3.6 -which I suspect- or 4.0.3...
