I have RedHat Linux 7.1 installed on my i386-based Acer
machine. I installed 7.1 today and observe that
XFree86 -version indicates :
XFree86 Version 4.0.3 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400)
Release Date: 16 March 2001
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Operating System: Linux 2.2.17-8smp i686 [ELF]

I believe that the above output should mean that the X-server
configuration file would be taken as /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
Yet, the file - /etc/X11/XF86Config is being considered for
configuration.
My system is a multihead [ dual-monitor ] setup with 2 Acer
monitors. I had previously had a successful setup with
the same 2 monitors and 2 VGA cards and 7.1. But, the file
being considered for X configuration was XF86Config-4. This
time, after a fresh installation, the file being considered
is XF86Config.
The 2 files XF86Config & XF86Config-4 are different because
the section "ServerLayout" does not exist in XF86Config. This
Section is very important for the layout in a multiscreen
setup.
- Can someone let me know how to force the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to be
used in prefernce to XF86Config
- Your timely suggestions can help me bail out of this work-stopper..
I am keen to get back my multihead configuration to continue my work.
