You should have stayed with RH 7.2 (I hope I don't start a flame war here ;^) and upgraded with the RPM to X 4.2... Anyhow just a short explaination about servers and drivers and the difference between X3.x.x and X4.x.x In X 3.x.x you had different servers for different video adapters (the were a couple of *standard* ones like the XF86_SVGA) In X 4.x.x you have only ONE server: XFree86 and different drivers for different video adapters. There ias actually a RADEON one as well as a couple of others for ATI (ati, r128 etc...) If I were you I would install RH 7.2 (just because I am more familiar with it than with Debian, not because it is better...) and specify a normal console login rather than an interactive one. Theoretically, it should automatically select the radeon driver when you configure X and it should configure you to run 4.1 (that's what came with it last time I installed it...) You should then, just to check run X -version It should give you 4.1 If not then you should go to /etc/X11 rename X to X3.3.6 or whatever and create X as a symlink to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 That will give you 4.1 when you do startx Then run startx If anything goes wrong then post both your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and your log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) and a slighly more detailled description of you video adapter (model number for instance the couple of letters following the numbers are also quite relevant..) Then and only then will the people here know enough to help you... Lionel --- "Jason J.W. Pock" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > All I want to do is use Linux. Why must it be so difficult?
