When I tried that the mouse did not work either, when xf86cfg loaded it
appeared that the mouse worked, but the mouse would still jump around.

Try using the "Auto" mouse driver...  I had a Serial Microsoft Wheel mouse
that I couldn't ever get working under X, until I ran the xf86cfg, and
noticed the driver being loaded was named "Auto."  Let me know if that
works...
