Im guessing your running RedHat 7.2?  Are you running gdm?  Cause if you
are that would cause the problem your describing.  gdm is the consul
mouse emulator thing.  Basically if you can use your mouse on the consul
then you have gdm running.  Try killing gdm or setting it to repeat. 
Once you set gdm to repeat set xf86 to use /dev/gdmdata as the source
for the mouse.  I think that should get it to start working.  Good
