Unplug it and plug the new one in...:^)

(if your set-up is similar to mine linux checks for new hardware at boot time)
If your new monitor has lower sync figures than the old one (should theoretically not 
be the case)
then hack your XF86Config before going into X (i.e. switch temporarily to a non 
interactive login
and start X with startx until everything is fine...)
