Dear XF86 users

I have an old laptop (AST Ascentia M,
year of construction 1996/7).
A few weeks ago I have installed
Debian linux 2.2 on that machine. This linux
distribution uses XF86 version 3.3.6, I assume.
Unfortunately, I do not know how to get
my video card (which is
cirrus logic 7556 with 2 Mb ram) working properly.
The configuration program XF86Setpup
tells me that it cannot find the server; I need to
use a "generic card" instead.
This works but I do not get a good
screen (ie. it is very small with a bad resolution).

Further, XF86Setup recommends to install the right server.

What am I to do in a more verbose language?

I think that there should be a way to fix my problem
(according to the Webpage
http://www.xfree86.org/current/Status9.html
 at least for
XF86 3.3.6).

-How?

Should I install a newer version of XF86?

Thank you very much for your attention and your
hints.

Regards

M. Jakob
