[Newbie]intel i810 problems

I'm trying to start X with "startx" command and I get a blank screen, (my monitor sort of shuts down) I have the latest version of Xfree86 (4.2.1).  Basically, I'm trying to start KDE.   Keep in mind I'm really new at this so please explain with detail   Thanks alot Marc
