Newbies seems like the correct list for this question ... In a UK context, how (or more accurately where) should I tag traffic_signals?
Consider a simple traffic-light controlled cross-roads (two roads intersecting at right-angles, all four approaches to the junction controlled by traffic lights). I started off by having a node at the junction and tagging that node with highway=traffic_signals. Then I started wondering if I should really be placing a node on each of the 4 approach ways just before the junction and tagging those nodes with highway=traffic_signals. That's what is really happening on the ground, though I'm not convinced I can measure the placement accurately enough. What really got me thinking about this was when I started wondering about what to do when the traffic lights incorporate pedestrian lights as well. Now I need a node on each of the four approaching ways that is tagged as highway=crossing, and it should be the same node as the one tagged highway=traffic_signals if putting the traffic_signals on each approaching way.
