Hi David, I don't know the common practice. I tag the node at the junction (normally). But if streets with more than 1 lane per direction cross, I place a separate node in the middle of the junction and tag this one. I considered the outcoming image as the main target. The traffic signals appeare in Osmarender at zoom=17. And at this zoom level, more than one icon would be too much and too dense.
