Hmm... I tried the second way, but it didn't create either a way or a node.  
For the moment I've managed by making new nodes for the start and end of each 
road, naming the road, then merging nodes where appropriate.  That part's 
finished for this section.

Next problem, then.  Adding details, eg. a postbox.  I tried adding a node 
close to the road for the amenity, but it just snapped onto the road.  How do 
I add these features?

Sorry for so many questions, but once done I shan't need to ask again :-)  At 
the end, perhaps I could add my bit to Rick's on the wiki :-)
