I did a comparision between Manchester, England and Fort Worth Texas, attempting image downloads using various default WMS links. I had the same result as you, with NPE maps, using the latest default setting. I had red tiles "Exception Occurred" when I attempted to download Yahoo data. the same results I have for Fort Worth. Can you download Yahoo images? I also attempted Open Aerial Maps and Terra Server. I could get Terra Server in Fort Worth (although it isn't usable for various reasons) but not in Manchester. I think that is due to image availability. At one time, I was getting white tiles with a Yahoo copyright 2009 notice. I see that Potlatch is using 2006 imagery. While the newer data would be nice, anything is better than nothing.
