Using that reasoning, then why are roads depicted as a linear way with no width? All roads should be an area, depicted as the area between each road edge, then you might also need another area on either side of the road to depict the road allowance (ditches) alongside the road. If roads are going to be depicted as linear ways, then the areas bounding those ways can be depicted using the linear way as an edge of the neighboring area.
