Ta. However, I see that
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:footwaystates that "footway" is
"abandoned".

Anyhow, the two tags seem to be synonymous.

On this topic, I'm a bit puzzled by the idea of a street (other than a
one-way street, perhaps) being marked as having a pavement
(footway/sidewalk/whatever) on the left or the right. Left or right from
whose perspective?
