As root, try using sndconfig. When all else fails, I just choose Sound Blaster compatible--everything is. On board sound usually isn't all that great anyway, so using the SB drivers shouldn't cost you much. If it isn't installed, hopefully someone helped you install apt. If they did, you can just "apt-get sndconfig" or select it in synaptic.
