Many thanks to all.  It works.  I must admit that I am very surprised
that XMMS shipped without the decoder.  I assumed that there was some
problem in my setup.  Anyway, the MP3 decoder installer did it.  I got
the file xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-13.i386.rpm from
http://staff.xmms.org/priv/redhat8/ and installed it.  I am now feeling
much more happiness.  Thanks to all--
