Usually, the user does something that causes the card to drop in and out of promiscuous mode. For example, do you use tcpdump, iptraf, ethereal? Both of these applications can cause the card to enter promiscuous mode.
Also, promiscuous mode isn't that bad. If your network is on a switch and not a hub, it won't make hardly any performance difference at all since the packets (technically called frames for shared media like ethernet) won't ever reach your card anyway.
