        Well, partition type 7 is for NTFS, so it sounds like (hd0,4) is the
right partition.  Now, number 4 is the fifth partition, which means it
is probably the first partition of the extended partitions.

        Anyway, the error that you are getting really seams like the error
it would give if you had done root instead of rootnoverify.  The whole
point of the noverify is that it won't try to determine anything about
the partition type.

        Anyway, you could try your luck with LILO if you really want to I
guess.  Oh, and does Windows actually let you boot to an extended
partitoin?  I know you couldn't with Win95/98, but maybe 2000/XP you
can.
