Hiya everyone,Hello, I'm assuming that this is your very first time installing linux. I hope I'm not being condesending here, I'm not trying to be, just let me explain a couple of things real quick...
I've spent some time today trying to install linux right onto my windows hard drive... I stuck in the Mandrake 9.0 cds and some Redhat cds but I didn't see any documentation on how to do it.
So, how do I install linux (either Mandrake or Redhat) onto my windows hard drive?
Thanks!

Linux, in general, can't be installed on a "Windows harddrive" or what we will call a windows partition. It needs it's own place on your harddrive to live. There are a couple of ways to do this.
1. Start over from scratch. - This is the most recomended, although it's a pain in the butt if you've been using your computer for any amount of time. The method here is to make a partition on your hard drive that is smaller than the whole size of the drive. Install Windows on it. Then after that is done, install Linux on the remaining part of your hard drive.
2. Resize your Windows Partition - Probably what you are going to want to do. Mandrake 9.1 has resizing utilities in the install procedure, but here are some hints. Defragment your Windows partition first. This makes the resizing process go faster. Then boot into Mandrake install CD, and there should be an option to resize your partition, or install in free space or something like that. Install Linux and you should be set.
3. Nuke Windows and go with a Linux-only setup - If you're brave, then go for this. But most people will recommend going with a dual boot setup. It's probably the best way to go at first.
No matter what you do, backup important data before doing any of this. Normally there's never a problem installing linux. But we can not be responsible for losing your music collection. Backup. It's a good feeling.
Another helpful thing is to use the installer's recommended partitioning scheme. You can make your own, but to start out, just use theirs.
Ok is this confusing enough. Just to let you know, I would be willing to get together with you and help if you would like. Just contact me off-list.
