[newbies] Copy problems

Hi to all.  I have noticed an odd problem.  There seem to be 2 
symptoms.  First, I have previously posted a description of an odd 
"staggered" effect when I am copying via the network.  It copies, stops, 
copies, stops, etc.  The second symptom occurs when copying HDD to HDD.  
In this case, I am copying from one physical drive to another.  The copy 
process seems to be excessively long.  I have run top and observed the 
following:

This is a rather perplexing problem... I am uncertain of how to approach 
it.  Does anyone have any ideas?  Thanks.
