I think you mean something like:

ln -s /mnt/usb /home/username/usb

maybe?  Then you can access your usb drive (when it is mounted) by
cd-ing to ~/usb.

Um, not sure what you mean.  Usually once you create a symbolic link you
can just forget about it being a link and treat it like normal for
copies and stuff.  If you want to copy the actual link to somewhere it
looks like you can do:

cp -d link ~/
