I have tried, with similar results. It wasn't very fun. I second Jake's recommendation to just get the rpm for the kernel that you need. If urpmi isn't an option because of a slow internet connection, try downloading it next time you are on campus. Browse around here:
ftp://mirrors.xmission.com/mandrake/official/10.0/i586/Mandrake/
and see what you can see. Unfortunately I don't see an official Mandrake rpm for kernel 2.6.7 which is what you said you needed. If you really can't live without 2.6.7 then you might just have to compile it yourself. In that case good luck, and please let me know what you had to do to get it to work ;)
