Look at the following lines:
this is a test                  1
this is another test            2
here is yet another test        3

Those numbers won't line up if you don't have it printing at 8
characters.

So do I understand correctly that it's a standard convention for tabs to be hard-coded at 8 characters? If so, it looks like I'll just have to learn to live with it. :)
