Hunt through sourceforge or freshmeat looking for something particularly
small or that you're interested in, then look at the buglist or feature
requests and see if something looks easy enough that you can submit a
patch for it? That'd be a good way to start, I think.
If you're interested in Java, I have half a dozen projects on sourceforge
that might be good fodder for someone just wanting to get involved in a
project in their spare time. Feel free to let me know if you're
interested.
