Milosevic needs Russian help
Russia might post bail before the International Hague
Tribunal to release Slobodan Milosevic from custody,
said Borislav Milosevic, brother of Slobodan Milosevic
and ex-Yugoslav ambassador to Russia, at a press
conference in Moscow on Thursday.
He said this would enable Slobodan Milosevic to defend
himself properly at his war crimes trial. Borislav
Milosevic said that his brother, considering the
tribunal illegal, waived his right to counsel and was
defending himself at the trial.
According to Borislav Milosevic, his brother "has only
one telephone, which works irregularly", against a
huge apparatus of the prosecution. In addition, the ex-President was
under close surveillance, and all his telephone conversation were
tapped, including personal ones, the former diplomat said.
Borislav Milosevic said that the ex-President was not
going to ask the Yugoslav government to be his
guarantor before the Hague Tribunal. At the same time,
in the opinion of the former diplomat, Russian
politicians might come forward as witnesses in this high-profile case.
He said Yevgeny Primakov and Nikolay Ryzhkov were ready to be witnesses.
Borislav Milosevic reiterated that the trial of his
brother was a political process aimed at "justifying
NATO's crimes in Yugoslavia". He said the
International Hague Tribunal was illegal because it
had been created by the UN Security Council , while,
under the UN Charter, this organization was not
empowered to create judicial bodies. Moreover,
Milosevic's extradition to the Hague Tribunal was in
violation of the Yugoslav Constitution and Yugoslav
laws, and was nothing other than "a simple abduction",
Borislav Milosevic stressed. However, the ex-diplomat
is convinced that the trial would eventually collapse.
"No normal court in the world can deliver a guilty
verdict based on assumptions and political rhetoric
rather than on real evidence, " he said.
