Here we stand today, six years to the day when our world literally
exploded around us.
I remember the absolute shock and horror of a friend of mine, the
child of ex-pat Serbs. He had been in the U.S. Army, in intelligence.
I recall telling him, back in late 1991 or early 1992 that I wondered
how he would react when not if America attacked Yugoslavia. He laughed
and told me, in no uncertain terms, that America would never attack
Yugoslavia, after all we were allies. I can't say I was happy when I
was proved right.
I recall, in the days leading to the NATO gang rape of Yugoslavia, how
many of us tried in all the ways we had at our disposal, to abort what
we all knew was a gross violation of international law and reason. I
remember how we all felt when we heard that NATO had begun its brutal
campaign of mass destruction.
One of the questions that has arisen in the present but should have
been asked then is the veracity of the mainline media. Today, in the
context of the edifice of lies, echoed and magnified by the mainline
media that lead to the Iraq attack, some commentators have begun to
question the veracity of the mainline media. How is it that when the
mainline media echoed and magnified the sheer dreck spouted by the
Clinton Administration, no questions were asked? Nor are any questions
being asked today, six years later, when it is more than amply evident
that each and every justification for the NATO gang rape of Yugoslavia
has been proved false, JUST AS IS THE CASE WITH BUSH'S JUSTIFICATIONS
FOR THE WAR IN IRAQ!
During NATO's version of the 5:00 o'clock follies during NATO's gang
rape, the scribes of the mainline media mostly gobbled up the
predigested pap being pumped by the likes of Mark Laity and Jamie
(State Department spokesman James Rubin, the Clinton
administration's
principal liaison with the Kosovo Liberation Army guerrillas) Rubin
uncritically and without question. There have been numerous
deconstructions of the uncritical repetitions of Bush Administration
lies about Iraq and the run-up to the conflict. Where oh where were
(are) the desconstructions of the absolute torrents of crap and
disinformation fed to the American public about NATO's gang rape of
Yugoslavia? Why is it that many of the same 'rogue' journalists that
are now being quoted by the antiwar activists (Pilger and Fisk, e.g.)
were totally ignored when they wrote about the bombing of Yugoslavia?
Even Fisk, hardly one who could be typified as a Serbophile, unmasked
NATO's bombing of refugee columns which NATO, through the likes Laity
and Rubin, charged was committed by the Serbs.
Though we all feel the weariness of Sisyphus, we must all resolve not
to lose our resolve. We must continue to talk, write, agitate and do
what each of us can, to keep this matter on peoples' minds. We must
never flag in our efforts to correct people who make idiotic
statements like "the massacre of thousands at Srebrenica", "genocide
and ethnic cleansing of Albanians in Kosovo", "the bodies
burned/dissolved in the Trepca mines", etc. ad nauseam. Especially
when talking to those who are so averse to the US spreading DU across
Iraq, ask them what their position is about the US SPREADING DU IN THE
HEART OF EUROPE! When speaking to those who oppose the war in Iraq
because it is an illegal war (i.e., a war of aggression lacking a SC
resolution) ask them how and why it was any less illegal for NATO to
attack Yugoslavia without a SC resolution? Don't get me wrong, I
oppose the Iraq attack, but, by the same token, I opposed NATO's
attack on Yugoslavia. Imperialism is wrong regardless whether the
target is the Philippines, Hawaii, Yugoslavia or Iraq.
