German Muslims condemn train attacks

The sixteen largest Muslim organisations in Germany have vehemently
condemned the failed bomb attacks on two passenger trains on July 31. In a
joint statement, they said the attacks could not be justified under Islam
and that terrorism was a threat to and a crime against the whole of
humanity. The statement went on to say that German Muslims were doubly
affected, both as potential victims and because many people saw them as
being partly to blame. The organisations also appealed to politicians not to
cut civil liberties.

Israeli army kills Palestinian in W Bank

Israeli soldiers have shot dead one Palestinian and wounded five others in a
clash in the West Bank. Witnesses say soldiers fired on Palestinians
throwing stones at them in the city of Nablus, killing a youth. The incident
took place after the army surrounded a building where two wanted militants
were believed to be holed up.
Israeli troops also detained four Palestinians in the Gaza Strip near the
southern town of Rafah.

Iran reasserts its atomic right

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has again asserted that his country
has a right to nuclear technology. He made the statement during the
inauguration of a new heavy water plant at the Arak facility. The project,
designed to feed heavy water to an adjacent research reactor still under
construction, would potentially enable the new plant to produce
weapons-grade plutonium needed for an atomic bomb. Tehran insists its
nuclear research activities are for civilian purposes only. The UN Security
Council has given Iran an August 31 deadline to halt its sensitive nuclear
activities or face possible sanctions.

Iraqi PM calls for reconciliation

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has urged hundreds of tribal leaders
gathered in Baghdad to unite to end sectarian bloodshed between Sunnis and
Shia. At least 17 people have been killed in violence that coincided with
al-Maliki's push for reconciliation.
Gunmen in the town of Baquba 65 kilometres north of Baghdad attacked a
Shi'ite family, killing four and wounding 11. Four Kurdish civilians were
killed in a drive-by shooting near the northern oil city of Kirkuk. Nine
others were reported killed in other attacks across the country. Iraqi media
quote officials as saying abducted Sunni member of parliament Tayseer
al-Mashhadani has been freed after almost two months in captivity. No group
has claimed responsibility for seizing her while travelling from Diyala
province to a parliamentary session.

Six soldiers killed in north Sri Lanka

An explosion has killed six soldiers and wounded at least four in Sri
Lanka's Jaffna peninsula. The government blamed the separatist Tamil Tigers
for the blast, which occurred during an operation to clear bunkers. Fighting
in the northern region has killed over 600 soldiers and rebels over the past
two weeks. A Red Cross ship has arrived off the Jaffna peninsula and begun
unloading food and aid to an estimated 200,000 refugees and half a million
local civilians. It is the first such shipment since road access to Jaffna
was cut off two weeks ago. In the capital, Colombo, police say they have
seized a major Tamil Tiger cache of mines, assault rifles and detonators.

Uganda ceasefire deal reached

Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army rebel group have signed a cessation of
hostilities deal. The accord, which was finalised in Juba, Sudan, requires
that both sides stop attacks and hostile propaganda as of Tuesday. Current
talks are to continue until a final agreement is reached to end the 20-year
war that has killed tens of thousands and displaced nearly two million
people in northern Uganda. The rebels had declared a ceasfire on August 4.
Kampala has offered amnesty to the LRA's leaders, who are wanted by the
International Criminal Court and have not joined the talks. The rebel
leadership has remained at bases in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

US envoy to press Sudan over Darfur

A US envoy heading to Khartoum has accused Sudan's government of preparing a
new offensive in the war-scarred region of Darfur.
Assistant Secretary of State for African affairs Jendayi Frazer said several
rebel groups that had not signed a peace treaty in May were also rearming.
She said she would press Sudan's President Omar al- Beshir to drop his
objections to a 17,000-strong United Nations force. It would take over from
7,000 African Union troops. Frazer said she feared heavy civilian losses if
Sudanese troops and rebels clashed. Recent war and famine have claimed about
300,000 lives.

Seven insurgents killed in British strike

British forces in Afghanistan have killed seven insurgents in a strike on a
convoy preparing to attack NATO forces in the country's south. A spokesman
from the NATO-led ISAF force said the attack occurred on Friday in the Musa
Qala area of Helmand province.
Earlier, two French special forces soldiers were killed and two more wounded
in clashes with Taliban militants. French troops attached to the US-led
operation "Enduring Freedom" are based in the southern city of Spin Boldak,
near the Pakistan border.

Bundesliga soccer scores

In German Bundesliga soccer action, reigning champions Bayern Munich played
to a 0-0 stalemate with neighbours FC Nuremberg, missing the chance to move
to the top of the tables. Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund defeated VfB
Stuttgart 3-1.
