Western journalists freed in Gaza

Two Western journalists from the US Fox News television network have been
freed in the Gaza Strip after being held hostage for two weeks by
Palestinian militants. US reporter Steve Centanni and freelance cameraman
Olaf Wiig from New Zealand were seized by the previously unknown Holy Jihad
Brigades, which had demanded that all Muslim prisoners be freed from US
jails. Centanni said they were forced at gunpoint to convert to Islam and
were often roughly treated. After their release, the two journalists urged
fellow international reporters not to be put off working in Gaza by their
ordeal.

Kentucky plane crash, 49 people killed

In the US state of Kentucky, a passenger plane carrying 50 people has
crashed, killing all but one person on board. The one survivor, said to be a
man, is in critical condition and is being treated at the University of
Kentucky Hospital. There was no immediate word on what caused the crash
shortly after take-off in a field less than 2 kilometres from Blue Grass
Airport. Police said the plane was largely intact afterward, but there was a
fire following the impact.
A temporary morgue is being set up at the scene and the bodies will be
brought to the state medical examiner's office.

Bombs in Iraq kill at least 15

A series of bomb blasts across Iraq has left at least 15 people dead. A bomb
planted in a mini van detonated outside the Palestine hotel in downtown
Baghdad, killing at least six people and injuring 16. Another car bomb in
the capital targeted the government-run newspaper al-Sabah, killing at least
three people and injuring 30. A bomb exploded in the town of al-Khalis, just
north of Baghdad, killing six and wounding more than a dozen. The attacks
came a day after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki appealed to Iraqis to
support his national reconciliation plan to end sectarian fighting between
Shiites and Sunnis, and terrorism by Sunni Arab insurgents.

Iran test-fires sub-to-surface missile

State television in Iran is reporting that the military has test-fired a
long-range missile in the Persian Gulf. Iran's army, air and naval forces
and missile units have been involved in week-long nationwide war games in a
demonstration of the country's readiness to "respond to any threat". In
April, the Islamic republic unveiled a wide range of weaponry including
multiple-warhead missiles, high-speed torpedoes and radar-evading anti-ship
missiles. The latest operations come amid rising international tension over
Tehran's nuclear programme, which the West fears is a cover for efforts to
build an atomic bomb.

Bugti supporters riot in Quetta

Authorities in the south-western Pakistan city of Quetta have imposed a
round-the-clock curfew and soldiers have been called in to try to stem
rioting that was sparked by the killing of a rebel tribal chief. Government
officials said 79-year-old Nawab Akbar Bugti was killed in a major military
operation near his mountain hideout in Baluchistan province. Dozens of
government forces and rebels are said to have been killed in the clash.
Following the news of Bugti's death, rioting broke out in Quetta, the
provincial capital, and it has since spread to other areas. Police say they
have arrested at least 200 people in Quetta alone.

British soldier killed in Afghanistan

A British soldier with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force
has been killed and at least seven others injured in an attack in southern
Afghanistan. The British Defence Ministry in London confirmed that the
soldier had died of wounds sustained after being shot by insurgents in
Helmand province.

Ferry evacuates 150 from Jaffna

A Red Cross ferry has arrived in north-eastern Sri Lanka with around 150
foreigners who had been trapped by fighting in the northern Jaffna
peninsula. Red Cross officials said the evacuees were being brought to the
capital, Colombo, by bus after arriving at the port of Trincomalee in the
north-east. They said hundreds more were waiting to leave the peninsula,
where heavy fighting broke out between government forces and Tamil Tiger
rebels earlier this month.

German navy could take lead in UN force

Germany could take the lead role in the naval element of a United Nations
force for southern Lebanon. Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung told the
Sunday edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper that Germany had
offered to play what he called a "dominant" role in patrolling Lebanon's
coastline to prevent arms shipments. The leader of the Social Democratic
Party, Kurt Beck has also suggested that Germany could lead the naval force.
Meanwhile, the newsmagazine Der Spiegel reports that Germany could
contribute as many as 1,200 troops to the force. That would make it the
third-largest European contingent after Italy and France. The Defence
Ministry in Berlin has neither confirmed nor denied the report.

No immediate terror threat in Germany

German police say there no longer appears to be any immediate threat of
terrorist attacks in Germany. Joerg Ziercke, the head of the Federal Crime
Office, told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper that recent arrests in connection
with last month's failed train bombings had neutralised that particular
threat. Meanwhile, prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for a Syrian
suspect in connection with the failed plot. A spokesman for the Federal
Prosecutors Office in Karlsruhe said the warrant was issued for the
23-year-old man taken into temporary custody on Friday in the southern city
of Konstanz.
He's one of two men being held in Germany in the case. Another turned
himself in to police in Lebanon. Both of the bombs found on trains in
Dortmund and Koblenz on July 31 failed to detonate.

Germany in basketball quarterfinals

In sports: Germany has advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Basketball
Championship in Japan by beating Nigeria 78-77. Dallas Mavericks star Dirk
Nowitzki led the way for the Germans with 23 points. Germany will face the
United States in Wednesday's quarterfinal, after the NBA stars crushed
Australia 113-73 to advance. And in Bundesliga soccer action, Nuremberg
remain top of the table after playing defending champions Bayern Munich to a
scoreless draw. Elsewhere, Leverkusen and Wolfsburg drew 1-all, Dortmund
beat Stuttgart 3-1, Aachen blanked Hanover 3-0, Cottbus downed Bochum 1-0
and Moenchengladbach beat Bielefeld by that same 1-0 score.
